JADD Madagascar

As part of its coastal ecosystem restoration efforts, JADD-AY4SD has established nurseries for 20,000 mangrove propagules within the Tsinjoriake Protected Area, in southwestern Madagascar. This initiative aims to strengthen coastal resilience to climate change and promote nature-based solutions.

Mangroves play a key role in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and supporting local livelihoods. This action particularly contributes to the restoration of degraded areas, especially at the mouth of the Onilahy River, which is highly exposed to floods and sea-level rise.

Beyond ecological restoration, these activities support the promotion of the blue economy, the development of local carbon markets, and the valorization of sustainable livelihood alternatives such as beekeeping.

Implementation was carried out with the active participation of local communities, members of the TAMIA Association, the manager of the Tsinjoriake Protected Area. Basic equipment was provided to ensure the establishment of three nursery sites in line with appropriate technical standards.

This initiative is part of the “Challenge Progamme », funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by UNIDO. It contributes to strengthening local initiatives focused on climate change adaptation.
